Castle Point has a strong history of involvement in the First World War. Alongside the brave men from Castle Point who fought in the war, it was an active home front. Canvey Island proved a hot spot for the first German army Zeppelin LZ38 in 1915- the airship that would be the first to bomb London in the war. The fierce anti-aircraft efforts of soldiers on Canvey Island delayed the German air invasion.

This week Rebecca Harris MP remembered the sacrifices of soldiers with the Castle Point community, and attended events around the constituency. Including the Royal British Legion Remembrance Service at the Paddocks Community Centre, Canvey Island, conducted by Rev’d. Marion Walford. After the service, Rebecca laid her wreaths at the War Memorial.

Rebecca was also invited to listen to the Essex Police Band performance at St Peter’s Church in Thundersley on Armistice Day - Saturday, 11th November.

About the Essex Police Band performance, she commented: “I particularly enjoyed their performance of the rousing British Legion March and their very moving rendition of Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan. An excellent evening and celebration of remembrance.”

Essex Police Band are a brass band ensemble that plays a wide range of music at many events throughout the year. This event, entitled ‘Concert of Remembrance’ ensured that all ticket proceeds were donated to the Royal British Legion. If you wish to follow more events by the Essex Police Band, you can find information here.
