Over the last four days, we have set out how the Conservative Party in Government is delivering on the People's Priorities and will build back better. We have set out how we are transforming our country fundamentally and permanently for the better. We will not be blown off course by the pandemic, but will continue to deliver on the priorities of the British people, and build back better from coronavirus.
We have an opportunity to unite and level up our country, delivering lasting change with more homes, plans to transform skills, more hospitals, more police, more schools, a greener economy and a fairer society.
Today at Conference:
Building Back Greener
The Prime Minister announced we will become the world leader in low-cost, green energy – creating 60,000 more jobs, slashing carbon emissions and boosting exports.
Over the coming years, the green economy will create millions of jobs – and we are determined to seize the opportunities that will come from building back greener after coronavirus. This sets us on our path towards a green industrial revolution, delivering lasting change across the country as we build back better and will and accelerate progress to net zero emissions by 2050.
We are raising our target for offshore wind from 30 gigawatts to 40 gigawatts by 2030. This will make the UK the world leader in clean wind energy – so that in ten years’ time offshore wind will be capable of powering every home in the country.
We will invest £160 million to upgrade ports and factories across the whole country to increase our offshore wind capacity – creating thousands of jobs. Our offshore wind capacity is already the largest in the world, and this new investment will see around 2,000 construction jobs rapidly created, while enabling the sector to support up to 60,000 jobs directly and indirectly by 2030, in the manufacturing of next generation wind turbines.
We will create a new target for floating offshore wind to deliver 1 gigawatt of energy by 2030, which is over 15 times the current volumes not just currently in the UK – but worldwide. This brand new technology allows wind farms to be built further out to sea in deeper waters, boosting capacity even further where winds are strongest. This will make the UK a world leader in the very latest offshore wind technology.
