Today the Labour Government once again blocked my Private Members Bill to introduce ‘Tuk’s Law’ and stop healthy pets from being put down without their owners consent.

My Pets (Microchips) Bill would have changed the law to prevent any healthy or treatable pet from being euthanised by a vet without having it’s microchip scanned for a rescue backup or without the permission of its registered owner first.

‘Tuk’s Law’ is named after a Mioritic Shepherd dog puppy who was presented to a vet as a stray and euthanised in 2017. 

The Bill was due to have its Second Reading debate in the House of Commons this afternoon, but was objected to by the Labour Government preventing the Bill from being debated and stopping the potential new law from progressing to its next stage. The Government had already blocked a debate on the Bill in January.

This Bill would have given peace of mind to every dog and cat owner that their beloved pets will never be put down without their consent. I will continue to campaign on this issue and for the measures in the Bill to become law for the sake of pet owners across the country.
