Rebecca recently visited South Benfleet Library with a group of local work-experience students to recycle broken electronics.
Libraries in Castle Point, including Canvey Island, Tarpots and, of course, South Benfleet, all offer convenient collection bins for small electrical items.
An estimated 880 million unwanted electrical items are sitting unused in homes. Yet only around 57% of these items are currently collected for reuse or recycling.
Taking these items to local Libraries means that valuable materials inside electrical items are recovered and reused in new products. The convenient collection bins make it easy for residents to responsibly recycle everyday items such as old mobile phones, chargers, cables, and small gadgets while visiting the library.
Larger electrical items can be taken to local recycling centres, such as Canvey Recycling Centre.
Unfortunately, ink cartridges, batteries, light bulbs, and vapes cannot currently be recycled here, but Rebecca and her group of work experience put a request to Essex County Council to consider including them.
