Marie Curie

Today at the Conservative Party Conference, Rebecca met with the Marie Curie team. Marie Curie is the UK’s leading end of life charity. They provide frontline nursing and hospice care, a free support line and a wealth of information and support on all aspects of dying, death and bereavement.

In Essex, 16,301 people reach the end of their lives each year. The work that the Marie Curie Team does not only nationally, but in Castle Point is extremely important and helps so many people in such a difficult time.

British Heart Foundation

Rebecca also met with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) today to discuss the need to tackle high blood pressure, which is linked to around half of heart attacks and strokes in the UK.

Nearly 1 in 5 patients in Castle Point have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, but the impact of the pandemic means there may be many more who don’t know that they have this often symptomless “silent killer”. The best way to treat high blood pressure is to tackle one of its leading contributors – too much salt in our diets.

With donations from the public, the BHF funds ground-breaking research that will get us closer than ever to a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases. For any more information on the BHF, please visit: www.bhf.org.uk.

Rebecca Harris MP commented:

“It was eye-opening to speak with the BHF at the Conservative Party Conference about how so much of the salt we eat is already in our food when we buy it, putting us at higher risk of developing high blood pressure, and as a result, heart attacks and strokes.

“Improving the nation’s heart health can help prevent people from needing treatment for chronic conditions that would see them join NHS waiting lists.”
