Today I joined my fellow Conservative MPs in supporting over 10,000 farmers from across the country at their demonstration in Westminster against Labour’s Family Farm Tax.
The Labour Government have threatened the very existence of our family farms at a time of global instability and where we should be doing all we can to improve our domestic food production. From April 2026, inheritance tax relief will be capped and any assets above the threshold will be charged a 20% tax rate. Labour is threatening the financial viability of British farms that have passed from generation to generation in an industry requiring incredibly hard work with very small profit margins. The Conservatives would reverse this cruel tax raid.
After promising a ‘new’ relationship with business they have gone against their word by raising the rate of employers national insurance contributions to 15% and the threshold at which employers start to pay is also being reduced from £9,100 per year to £5,000 per year. This is a significantly higher cost for business and a £25 billion tax rise alone.
The Chancellor’s Autumn Budget pushes taxes up across the board including raising Capital Gains Tax, cutting rates relief for businesses including our high street shops and hospitality sector, applying inheritance tax to unspent pensions pots and restricting the generosity of business property relief. Meanwhile, their own analysis shows their employment rights reforms through their Day One Rights Bill will have a £5 billion direct cost on business.
Millions of pensioners are being impacted by the cruel choice to remove the Winter Fuel Allowance from the majority of pensioners, including over 20,000 in Castle Point alone. During the debate on this cut, I highlighted the significant impact this will have on vulnerable pensioners in Castle Point who rely on this money to help heat their homes, not least the additional worry it will cause. The Conservative Party voted against this cut.
