🐈 Earlier this month at Conference, Rebecca met with friends from Cats Protection to talk about her Private Member's Bill on Tuk's law and what it means for cats and dogs.
Tuk's Law, named after a rescue dog sadly put to sleep despite a rescue offering him a home, would make it a legal requirement for vets to check an animal's microchip and contact any rescue back up before putting a healthy or treatable pet to sleep. Sadly, it is also the case that some domestic abusers threaten to put their partner's pets to sleep as a form of control, making this protection even more important.
Rebecca has long supported that this law be introduced, after meeting her constituent Dawn Ashley and campaigner Sue Williams who raised the story of Tuk, a five-week-old Mioritic shepherd mistakenly identified as a stray and euthanised by a vet who failed to scan his original chip.
Rebecca was appalled when the Labour Government blocked the Bill, when it objected to a debate and stopped the legislation progressing earlier this year.
Cats Protection is the UK's leading cat welfare charity and have homed over 1.5 million to new owners. Their aim is to make sure that every cat gets the best possible life and are cared for in a loving home.
To find out more about their work, support them, or even adopt one of their wonderful cats or kittens yourself, take a look at the following website: www.cats.org.uk.
Although the Government has so far blocked Rebecca's Bill, she is continuing to lobby ministers to make Tuk's Law a reality and give every animal the second chance they deserve.
