Castle Point MP, Rebecca Harris, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of further funding for local councils to repair potholes across the country. The Secretary of State for Transport, The Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, announced yesterday that an additional £100 million will be provided to local councils to repair roads, including fixing any potholes, that were badly affected by the recent winter weather.
Essex County Council, as the highways authority for Essex, is set to receive £2.6 million from the additional funding towards repairing potholes on roads across Essex.
This additional funding is on top of the £75 million in government funding already given to councils from the Pothole Action Fund this year, as well as the additional £46 million boost for highways authorities announced just before Christmas. Around 7 million potholes nationwide will be filled due to this money, announced in the 2016 Budget.
Commenting on the announcement, Rebecca said:
“The state of our roads in Castle Point is consistently raised with me by my constituents and remains a great source of frustration for drivers.
“This additional funding is welcome news for families and businesses in Castle Point who rely on our roads to get around. I will be encouraging the County Council to make full use of their allocation locally.
“I’m glad that the Government is investing both nationally and locally to improve the standard of our local roads. It shows that we are delivering on our commitment to invest in infrastructure to attract businesses and secure Britain’s future.”
